Welcome
Dear colleagues,
The Swiss Society of General Medicine SSMG/SGAM and Wonca Europe are very pleased to welcome you to the 15th Wonca Europe Conference 2009 in Basel which is held together with the 32nd national SSMG/SGAM congress on the topic of
«The Fascination of Complexity – Dealing with Individuals in a Field of Uncertainty».
A deep understanding of complexity and a virtuous handling of uncertainty are very important skills in the daily practice of family doctors.
Basel 2009 will be a platform for exchange of knowledge, experience and information between teaching, researching and practicing family doctors of Europe and beyond, in response to Wonca World’s call «…to improve the quality of life of the peoples of the world…».
This final programme offers you a great choice of presentations carefully selected by the Scientific Committee (SC) out of invited and more than 1200 spontaneously submitted and peer reviewed abstracts on topics in the fields of teaching, research, daily practice and quality improvement.
6 renowned key note speakers from Europe and overseas will introduce the theme of complexity and uncertainty and will span the bow from important challenges of our times – such as gene technology, nano sciences, neurobiology, environment and ecologic influences, innovative technologies and health politics – to family medicine. All these plenary sessions will be simultaneously interpreted from English into German and French.
2 hot topic speakers will conclude the main conference days with an attractive review of a current medical subject essential to our practice: «Prophylactic HPV vaccine: why or why not?» and «Influenza: dealing with viral uncertainty».
130 hours of workshops (WS)
25 «wild cards» – WS invited by the SC – represent a thread for complexity and uncertainty throughout the conference; given by invited renowned presenters from all over the world.
15 WS by the Swiss institutes for family medicine are about exciting innovative teaching models and challenges in the field of research in family medicine.
20 WS as part of the integrated national SSMG/SGAM congress in German and French discuss paediatric, gynaecologic, psychiatric an laboratory problems met by family doctors.
More than 15 WS from the network organizations EURACT, EGPRN and EQuiP, from special interest groups and collaborative organizations of Wonca and from the young doctors of the Vasco da Gama Movement.
More than 60 WS from presenters of all European countries on a varied bunch of interesting topics most relevant to the daily work of family doctors…
50 sessions with 300 oral presentations grouped by specific topics and showing an important sample of the rich research activities of family doctors in Europe and beyond.
555 posters which you will be able to study and discuss with the presenters.
In the abstract book you will find more information about all presentations. As a novelty for Wonca, the abstract book is a supplement to the Medline-listed international journal «Swiss Medical Weekly». This will allow all presentations of the Wonca Europe conference in Basel to be available on the Internet for «eternity».
However, you will get the deepest and most lasting insight into the offered topics by participating!
Between the lectures you will find plenty of time and opportunities to meet old and new friends from all countries of Europe and beyond. Discussing and learning from each other is the most efficient method for continuing professional development!
Caution: in Basel you can get infected by the legendary communicative disease named «Wonca fever». There is no vaccination available… But do not worry, there is a very effective therapy: after the exciting conference in Basel you will have the opportunity to visit more excellent European conferences in Málaga 2010, Warsaw 2011 and Vienna 2012…
